Chrome

Google has release their open source browser and I gave it a try yesterday. It’s based on the Mozilla framework.

It took only a couple of minutes to download and install the browser. I came across a couple of awesome features while clicking around the browser.

  • There’s a real-time search integrated to the navigation bar, which also searches for domain names while typing urls; e.g. it matches etickets.lk when I typed etickets – this is different from Firefox as this was the first time it visited this site.
  • There is a control panel to stop tabs and plug-ins
  • There is a detailed list of memory used by each tab and plug-in
  • It has a cool start page which shows the frequently visited sites
  • Then, there are incognito windows. No trace of what you browsed in these windows will be saved. This is very handy if you are using a public computer.

Google Blog Search

Google blog search is a search facility provided by Google (they are kind of good at searching ;) ) to search inside blogs. What is so special of blog search over web search?

Well, blog search is tailored for blogs. So it has couple of nice features like sorting the results by relevance or date. Sorting by date is expedient when you want to see the latest updates about a topic. But when you sort by date many unrelated results appear at the top, and the option to search within a specified period of time comes in handy here (You can find this option in the advance search and also in the panel to the left of the search results).

That’s not it! It has more great features:

If your blog isn’t included you can submit it here.

Google is working on a project to develop renewable energy which is cheaper than coal. They have named this project as RE<C (Renewable Energy < Coal): a cool way to name a project.

Although there are many similar projects on finding new sources of energy, Google believes that those projects don’t get enough funding and some are not commercially viable since they are too-risky for traditional investors.

Google engineers will be working on this project and they plan to hire new engineers too. Google expects to make use of their information tools to develop cheaper renewable energy. They also want to integrate this project with RechargeIT project.

They will be spending a serious amount of money on this and they want to get results soon, not in decades as they say. So let’s hope they come up with an environment friendly energy source which is cheaper and practical in the near future.

You can read more about this project on Google.org : http://google.org/rec.html

You can’t see me!

Now there’s an invisible mode in Google chat. Now in the web chat there’s an option to be invisible so that others won’t see you as online but you’ll see them (not if they are also invisible :P ).

I can see them

But they can’t see me ;)

Oops, they still have it only in the web chat (one you get through Gmail) :P . I wonder when they will integrate this feature and also the group chat and smiley’s (these are available in the Gtalk gadget), to Gtalk client.

Google CodeJam

CodeJam wasn’t held this year (only CodeJam Latin America), after having many codejams last year.

Google has announced they’re plans about Codejam, and posted some sample problems. It seems like these problems are a bit different form TopCoder as points will be received for the number of test cases solved – not 100% or 0%.
