They have given the results of Imagine Cup 2007 – Web Design competition. Few of my friends (Sandaruwan, Keshan, Nuwan and Kasun) participated and they had an innovative, useful and nice (beautiful) submission – Acso.

I was so sure that these guys would be selected to the top 6. When I heard that they were not selected and had a look at the submissions which were selected (iPhysics, Scrooba!, …), I felt that it wasn’t fair.

As far as I could feel their submission had all the qualities / characteristics the Imagine Cup organizer’s had asked for :

  • Reach : this site doesn’t require flash plug-ins or any other plug-ins to be downloaded and can be viewed on any browser
  • Accessibility : this is the only feature which is not preset on this, but I didn’t see it on other projects as well
  • Innovation & Differentiation : the idea, features and design was innovative and creative – I haven’t seen anything similar before
  • Usability : although it has not achieved zero-training, it can be used by any user who has used the internet before. The site is based on web 2.0 and it has a small help on the sidebar which guilds you in everything.
  • Maintainability : well I don’t know much about this as I haven’t seen their code, but I know for sure that they are good programmer’s who good programming practices since I have worked with them
  • I was passionate about Imagine Cup because of what I heard from them – the team work, innovation and creativity required (also the prizes ;) ), and I wanted to compete in next year. But now I’ll give it a second thought.

If you are a high school student and want to test your Programming Skills then goto SLOI web site.

This competition focuses on algorithmic skills and you can use either Pascal or C/C++ to solve problems. The duration of the competition is five hours and the contestants will be given three problems to solve each carrying 100 marks

In order to participate in this competition, to be held on 22nd April (postponed), you need to register in the above web site and solve some of the practice problems.

This is year’s International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) will be held in Croatia, so this is a great chance for you to show your programming skills to the world.

This is the AutoIt script I wrote to test my MARC(Millennium All-Island Robot Competition) robot -see previous post- through all the given batch runs. I posted this code so that anyone interested can use this to test his robot.

    Love Challenges?

MARC (Millennium All-Island Robot Competition) is a programming competition which commenced in November, (yeah, it’s a bit late now). You got to write a program to run a robot (a virtual robot) to collect stuff. It’s a bit like the mouse in a maze problem at first sight.

The robot is supposed to collect some stuff (they call it research data), open doors if you want to go inside rooms, teleport between places, so it is complicated; moreover, you don’t know where the things are – you can only see just a few inches ahead of you.

Although there are many international competitions like this, I think this is the only or one of the few in Sri Lanka. The cash prizes they have offered are also attractive – four hundred thousand for under 19 category and six hundred thousand for open category.

If you are interested (in the competition or money) you can download the rules and the SDK from MARC web site and give it a try.
